Commvault AWS Migration

Commvault AWS Migration

Background

A company that mines precious metals currently utilizes an on-premises Commvault installation for disaster recovery and business continuity. Seeking to enhance their recovery capabilities, they have engaged Subcontractor to migrate to a Commvault implementation leveraging multiple AWS availability zones for improved redundancy and recoverability.

Project Scope

  • Install and Configure Production CommServe: Set up CommServe in the Production Region/AZ, including planning, installation, and post-installation tasks.
  • Install and Configure Components: Deploy and configure Media Agents, DDB, Index Cache, and VSA Proxy Server for optimal performance and redundancy.
  • Create and Configure Storage Infrastructure: Establish Storage Pools, Libraries, Mount Points, and Policies to manage data storage and retention.
  • Configure Backup and Recovery Policies: Define Storage Policies, Schedule Policies, and Client Groups to streamline backup operations and ensure data consistency.
  • Create Auxiliary Copies and Replication: Implement Dash, AUX, and Replication Copies to facilitate data replication and ensure data availability.

Benefits

  • Enhanced Disaster Recovery: Leveraging AWS cloud services enhances redundancy and recoverability, ensuring minimal data loss and downtime in the event of a disaster.
  • Scalability and Flexibility: By migrating to AWS, Yamana Gold gains scalability and flexibility to adapt to evolving business needs and data growth.
  • Cost Optimization: Moving to a cloud-based solution eliminates the need for costly on-premises hardware and maintenance, resulting in potential cost savings.
  • Improved Performance: Optimal configuration and deployment of Commvault components, including DDB and Media Agents, ensure high-performance backup and recovery operations.

A company that mines precious metals needed to augment their disaster recovery capabilities by integrating AWS cloud computing services with their existing Commvault setup. This migration to AWS will enable redundant backup of production data across multiple cloud-based DR Availability Zones. The project will be executed in two phases: "Build Production Environment" and "Build Disaster Recovery Environment." This case study focuses on Phase 1: "Build Production Environment."
